Colour story

Where this came from.

A flatweave rug supplied by the founder: rust squares on a chalk lattice, with charcoal blocks and a pale sage-grey cross.

SAMPLED for five of six. The ground is lifted — see its note.

Where each colour came from

  • Fabric A #E6E1D6
  • Fabric B #39342E
  • Fabric C #959F98 sampled, 8.2% — the sage-grey cross. The only cool colour in the palette and the reason it stopped reading flat.
  • Fabric D #C2B9AA sampled, 13.8% — the warm grey lattice.
  • Fabric E #8D5B2F sampled, 51.9% — the rust squares. The largest area in the rug; placed at 7.9% here, because at rug proportions it would swamp the quilt.
  • Fabric F #634F3B sampled, 1.6% — the deepest brown.

What it does to the seams

Weighted by seam length: 0% of the quilt's seams fall below 1.25 contrast. Lightness range 67. Two darks rather than one — they read as doing different jobs.

Shapes
  • 2 of the 6 fabrics are dark. Two darks compete; one dark punctuates.

Contrast is measured on screen colours, not on fabric. It tells you where the piecing will disappear, not which bolt to buy.
