Colour story

Where this came from.

A five-band palette image supplied by Allison: charcoal green, forest, sage, burgundy and brick.

SAMPLED for five of six. The image has five bands and the quilt has six fabrics, so the sixth is not from it.

Where each colour came from

  • Fabric A #667257 sampled, band 3 — the sage, used as the ground at 50.2% of the quilt
  • Fabric B #71211D sampled, band 4 — the burgundy
  • Fabric C #4D5C46 sampled, band 2 — the forest
  • Fabric D #474B41 sampled, band 1 — the charcoal green
  • Fabric E #1F2A21 NOT IN THE IMAGE. Chosen by Allison to fill the sixth slot, so that the burgundy is not asked to stand in for two different fabrics.
  • Fabric F #B23B2B sampled, band 5 — the brick

What it does to the seams

Checked against all 14 fabric pairs weighted by how much seam length each actually shares in this quilt. 14.4% of the seam length falls below 1.25 contrast. The largest single loss is the sage ground against the brick at 1.16, on 8.8% of seams. Five of the six colours sit within twelve points of lightness of each other, so the quilt reads tonal: the piecing is felt more than seen. Chosen knowingly.

Reads as
Texture
  • Every colour sits within 29 points of lightness. The piecing will read as texture rather than as shapes.
  • Nothing in this palette is lighter than 43. A design of many small pieces needs somewhere for the eye to rest.
  • 4 of the 6 fabrics are dark. Two darks compete; one dark punctuates.
  • A-F carries 8.83% of the quilt's seams at contrast 1.16 — those seams will not read.
  • B-D carries 2.36% of the quilt's seams at contrast 1.21 — those seams will not read.
  • C-D carries 2.36% of the quilt's seams at contrast 1.25 — those seams will not read.
  • C-F carries 0.79% of the quilt's seams at contrast 1.21 — those seams will not read.

Contrast is measured on screen colours, not on fabric. It tells you where the piecing will disappear, not which bolt to buy.
